My Grammy Might Be Cooler Than Yours

It started with a text at 6:26 pm from my 93 year old grandma reading:

“Appreciate your advice on medical cannibis I will mail you and we could arrange a phone time miss you love 💕”

I went through D.A.R.E. twice and didn’t try marijuana until I was 37 and I tried it with my Dad. (He hadn’t had it since 1976 so it was a unique experience for both of us!) The LAST thing I ever expected as a law abiding citizen was for my GRANDMA to call ME asking for advice on pot. I am, by no means, an expert.

When we visited Grammy in San Diego, California I knew I wanted to go to a dispensary. It’s like going to Amsterdam and walking through the Red Light District; it’s illegal where I come from but legal where I was and it felt exciting to be doing something I felt like I wasn’t supposed to do.

What I didn’t expect was to be handed a printout by my grandma on the benefits of cannabis with her face eager to know if I was on board with the idea or appalled.

“Let’s go!” I said.

“Really? You’ll go with me?” She asked hesitantly.

Listen, the moment your 93 year old grandma asks you to take her to buy pot you know it’s an experience that doesn’t happen often, if ever, and you need to do it. (Or at least that’s how I see it!)

We walk into Apothekary, scan our IDs and find us an employee who can answer our many questions. See when I am curious about things I need to know everything. I need to research the heck out of things and ask a million questions until I feel satisfied. So we bombarded this super patient guy with questions, asked what would be good for Grammy, and settled on some listerine strip type of thing that was high in CBD and low THC to help her sleep.

That night we sat at the kitchen table laughing like school girls. I was sitting with my grandma, she with her granddaughter, about to take drugs. They were legal in this state but had we been in NJ they would have been illegal.

I TOOK DRUGS WITH MY GRANDMA.

Fast forward to today and Grammy wants to find out what will work best for her. Somehow I’m the expert (trust me, I’m NOT) but I will listen and help her figure out the questions she needs to ask to get her the effect she desires.

What I know is that it landed me in a 8pm phone conversation, in the middle of Target, discussing marijuana with my 93 year old Grandma.

Life is good.
