Pennies

Maya told me that this year she wanted to do something meaningful for Memorial Day. A lot of memorials were still happening online and, frankly, I wanted something tangible we could experience.

In my nightly Facebook scrolling I came upon this picture.

I’m not sure if this is an actual thing, I will research that tonight, but I thought it was a way to honor the veterans at a local cemetery.

We sifted through our loose change and found over a dollars worth of pennies. We then set out on this sunny Memorial Day and visited the graves of soldiers. We looked up their ranks and noticed their ages. We encountered veterans from WW1 and WW2 and even one who served in both wars. We found veterans from the Korean War and Vietnam. We even found three women who served in WW2!

I’m sharing this experience not to pat ourselves on the back but to give a tangible way to honor our military. We are saving our pennies to do this again on Veterans’ Day if anyone wants to join us.
